Best Washers / Dryers 2017 Buying Guide
Did you know October is one of the best times to buy a new washing machine, dryer, or both? Because new models are released in October, dealers and distributors are eager to clear their inventory of older models to make way for the new crop. And that means sale prices, folks.
Our own Todd Daganaar, owner of Hometown Hero Appliance Repair, is back to offer another expert take on the appliances available for those looking to upgrade or replace their washers and/or dryers. Having maintained and repaired every brand out there (at least, brands you’ll find in Omaha, NE), he’s in a good position to know which makes and models will be perfect for every budget and household. Here are his recommendations:
Washer Picks 2017
Premium Brand Washer: Samsung WF9110 5.6 cu. ft. Front Load Washer with SuperSpeed (WF56H9110CW) — $1699 MSRP
Our 2017 pick is an update to our 2015 pick (also a Samsung front load washer), with improvements to major features, as well as some new ones. Its best-in-class capacity is now what Samsung claims to be the “world’s largest washer.” The much-loved Vibration Reduction Technology of the earlier model is now VRT Plus, making the machine 40% quieter than before. And newly-added smart technology aids with cleaning, maintenance and troubleshooting. But all the flashy numbers and features wouldn’t matter if it wasn’t also just an absolute quality machine.
Honorable mention: Samsung WF7500 5.0 cu. ft. AddWash™ Front Load Washer (WF50K7500AV) — $1299 MSRP
Samsung’s new AddWash system lets you add clothing mid-cycle, which was a beloved feature of the old plain jane top loads that many have missed.
Midrange Washer: Samsung WF5000 4.2 cu. ft. Front Load Washer (WF42H5000AW) — $699 MSRP
Though it strips down the features, the quality of Samsung technology remains, and at a mid-range price tag. For self-preservation’s sake, I should probably encourage Omahans to purchase other brands, because the front-access pump cleanout on this and all Samsung washers makes key maintenance easy to do at home and saves you from calling out an appliance repair tech. But we’re an honest company and these are such good washers.
Discount Washer: Samsung WA7050 4.5 cu. ft. Top Load Washer (WA45M7050AW) — $699 MSRP (but we can find them in the Omaha area for around $475)
This top-loader is well-designed and will perform very well for many years if not overloaded. That said, in general, front load washers are more reliable than top load washers across the board, so if you’re debating between two machines, go front load.
Dryer Picks 2017
Premium Brand Dryer: Samsung DV9900 7.5 cu. ft. FlexDry™ Dryer (DVE60M9900V) — Gas: $1999 MSRP, Electric: $1899 MSRP
Your solid, reliable Samsung dryer—updated with smart technology to shut off and alert you when clothes are dry—plus an additional drying area on top of the unit, specifically designed for drying delicates without harming them.
Midrange Dryer: Samsung DV3000 7.2 cu. ft. Electric Dryer with Moisture Sensor (DV40J3000EW) — $549 MSRP
An entry-level Samsung electric dryer (which, for most other brands, would be high-end) that still maintains the solid mechanics of Samsung’s high-end laundry machines, all for a mid-range price.
Discount Dryer: Amana 6.5 Cu. Ft. Dryer With Wrinkle Prevent Option (NED4655EW) — $499 MSRP (found locally as low as $296)
Zero frills, perhaps even negative amounts of frills, but it will dry clothes, and holds up better than competing entry-level brands.

Premium Brand Combo: Washer: LG 4.5 cu. ft. Ultra Large Capacity TurboWash® Washer w/ NFC Tag On (WM4370HKA) AND Dryer: LG 7.4 cu.ft. Ultra Large Capacity TurboSteam™ Electric Dryer (DLEX4370K) — approx. $2999 MSRP for pair
Really, LG could have been substituted for Samsung in almost every category above, as they’re very similar products. LG appliances on a whole are very reliable and this set is no exception.
Midrange Combo: Washer: Samsung WF5200 4.2 cu. ft. Front Load Washer (WF42H5200AW) AND Dryer: Samsung DV5200 7.5 cu. ft. Electric Dryer (DV42H5200EW) — approx. $1598 MSRP for pair
Solid set with few bells and whistles, but still well-made and performs admirably on a main-floor laundry.
Discount Combo:
Washer: Roper 3.5-cu ft High-Efficiency Top-Load Washer (RTW4516FW) AND Dryer: Roper 6.5-cu ft Electric Dryer (RED4516FW) — approx. $598 for the pair
Again, no frills, but if you’re going cheap, these are the least cheap cheap ones.
